In Portland, Oregon, there is something for everyone, where a continuing tradition of nearly 120 years provides architectural masterpieces such as staid monuments to whimsical sculptures, water features throughout downtown serve as more than a visual reminder of the close relationship between Portland and this ubiquitous but precious liquid. Some of these architectural masterpieces were built to quench the thirst of humans and animals alike, others to honor the city and its people, and yet others simply to beautify. And all of these cannot help but be a delight to everyone. The delightful fountain called Animals in Pools on Yamhill and Morrison between SW Yamhill and SW Morrison and SW 5th and 6th Avenues is one of the cutest fountains in the world. Designed by Georgia Gerber, the ten fountains with twenty-five bronze sculptures of Pacific Northwest animals were installed in 1986 for the Local Improvement District for the MAX light rail.

The Portland Water Bureau maintains and operates the wonderful "Animals in Pools" fountains. These fountains typically running during the spring and summer months following winter "hibernation." Pedestrians mostly enjoy the sea lions, beavers, bears, river otters, and ducks and deer sculptures in the pools. These sculptured creatures provide fun and entertainment to passersby particularly to children. They also provide awe and merriment to the tourists. The Regional Arts and Culture Council today are taking an extra maintenance step at the fountains. Sculpture maintenance technicians will be waxing and cleaning the fountains beginning at 9:30 am. The sculptures will definitely look better than ever when people from the Regional Arts and Culture Council are done with project. And the Portland Water Bureau will turn the fountains back on again.
