Salmon Street Springs is located at SW Salmon, at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park is a park located on the west bank of the Willamette River in downtown Portland, Oregon.
The name of the park was changed in 1984 to honor former Oregon Governor Tom McCall. It is currently home to the Waterfront Blues Festival, Oregon Brewers Festival, and The Bite of Oregon Festival. The park is also the host of many Rose Festival events.
Salmon Street Springs may be the centerpiece of the city’s ultra-popular Tom McCall waterfront park.
Children of all ages delight at the fountains’ rhythmic, changing patterns that cycle through “Bollard,” “Mister” and “Wedding Cake” formations as sprays from its arching, inward-facing jets converge in the fountain’s center—all controlled by a computer underneath the main structure.
This artistic and play fountain is extremely popular in the summer. A computer regulates the changing patterns of the water display. This fountain definitely celebrates city life. Dedicated in 1988, the Portland Development Commission funded the fountain. It was Robert Perron Landscape Architects and Planners who designed the fountain. Portland Water Bureau replaced all the cast iron piping with heavy duty PVC in the main drain vault in 2004.
In preparation for the Rose Festival season every summer, filter pump motor bearing and other issues are addressed to make sure this water fountain is enjoyed during the busiest time of the year.
